And here we are in April, the month of showers! So this months gemstone is the beautiful Diamond!!
From the Greek word "Adamas", meaning invincible, diamonds are the hardest natural mineral on Earth. Although the white, or "colourless", diamonds are the most popular, Champagne and Cognac are the most commonly found Diamonds. They can also be blue, pink, red, green orange and black, with red being one of the rarest gemstones in the world.
When we think of engagement rings, we think of the Diamond solitaire or a beautiful cluster of Diamonds. Diamonds didn't actually become popular until the 1930's! (More on that another day) Maybe the reason for this is that the Greek God of Love, Eros, would shoot his diamonds through the hearts of people so that they would fall in love. His arrows were tipped with Diamonds. There are more engagement and wedding rings containing Diamonds than all the other gemstones combined! In 2012, the Diamond market was worth $30 billion!
Diamonds are formed deep in the Earth's mantle, normally at a depth of 140km, and take between 1 to 3.3 BILLION years to form before surfacing in a rare type of magma that also can contain peridot, garnet and diopside.
It is believed that Diamonds can protect against panic, pestilence and enchantments. Diamonds are thought to enhance positivity as well as negativity so that if they are given with love, they can return feelings of love; but a Diamond given with ill feeling can become "cursed".
