This week brings a stunning member of the topaz family, London Blue Topaz. Most topaz is naturally white, it is very rare to find a natural blue topaz. Blue topaz is one of December's birthstones and is the fourth and nineteenth anniversary gemstone. It is said to be a symbol of love and affection.
Found in both lighter and darker tones, blue topaz is known in the trade as Sky Blue Topaz, Swiss Blue Topaz and London Blue Topaz. As the stones with a deeper colour are the most valuable, London Blue Topaz have a higher value.
Topaz has a place in many countries and religions mythology - in Hindu mythology, the word topaz means heat and is one of the sacred stones of the Hindu's Kalpa tree; in Africa, healing rituals with topaz are practiced to establish communion with the realm of the spirit; in ancient Egypt, it is the symbol of the sun god Ra, who was the giver of life; the ancient Romans believed topaz could prevent sickness of the chest and abdominal pain.
