Gemstone of the Week!

When you bu gemstones, you want to be sure they're genuine and not glass.  This type of gemstone though is actually a type of glass......confused?  Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that forms when lava cools without crystal growth.

Obsidian can be dark green, brown or black, some have small white crystal inclusions and this is called snowflake obsidian

Obsidian is found in volcanic regions such as Japan, Italy, Iceland, Mexico and the USA and is not just used as a beautiful gemstone.  Believe it or not but obsidian has also been used in Cardiac surgery!  Obsidian blades have a cutting edge that is so much sharper than steel scalpels, with the edge measuring 3 nanometers and, when viewed under a microscope, the blade is still smooth!
